KNOWLEDGE LOSS IN SUMMER – WHAT TO DO?

Another summer vacation is coming, and parents are planning some fun and relaxing activities for their children to relieve the learning pressure they have faced. Điều này để giúp con quên đi những áp lực học tập. However, a summer filled with purely fun activities will prevent students of all ages from losing the knowledge of two to three months from the regular curriculum. Leading to Summer Learning Loss (SLL).

THT has suggested a few ways to prevent SLL. Just spend an hour to an hour and a half each day. You can help them fill in the gaps in their knowledge and prepare them for the upcoming school year.

1. Learn & Practice English Vocabulary with Affix

By learning affixes, children can improve their reading comprehension. Most multi-syllable words include a prefix or suffix added to the original word. Parents can find a list of affixes, including their meanings, in dictionaries and online sources. Let’s turn it into a game!

Children can create their own prefix and suffix tags on which they can write the meaning. They will surely find it interesting and easy to figure out the meaning of the affixes. Parents can also use this game to help children learn more vocabulary and help them avoid SLL.

2. Practising Mathematical Thinking After SLL

Although it may sound not interesting to solve 3 to 4 small math problems daily during the summer, this will prevent the child’s mathematical thinking from being worn out. They can see math work as their duty to complete during the day.

Parents can find math books suitable for all ages and levels at bookstores. Besides, this also helps them consolidate their knowledge during the year and get ready for the new school year.

3. Improve Reading Comprehension to Avoid SLL

To help children get the whole meaning of what they are reading. Parents can equip children with reading comprehension books to practice for a few minutes daily. These books can be easily found at bookstores or online sources. Children of all ages can improve their reading comprehension skills through those materials. There are plenty of self-questioning and interesting stories. This activity will build children’s information-gathering skills as well as logical thinking.

4. Review and Build Children’s Grammar Skills

Help children review the grammar structures learned in the previous year. Do some research about the upcoming grammatical structures. During the summer, it is very helpful to have children review and prepare new lessons 2 to 4 times a week. Parents should equip children with workbooks appropriate to their level and encourage them to check their own answers. Even if they make a mistake, correcting it will strengthen their grammar. This also helps children avoid SLL.

5. Encourage Creative Writing

Creative writing is an effective way to improve children’s writing in a fun and imaginative way during the summer. Each week, children should write one creative passage, whose topic parents can decide, such as a family vacation or a memorable memory. This allows children to unleash their creativity. They can use a dictionary to find some synonyms to diversify and enrich the sentences. This will not only make writing more enjoyable and improve children’s vocabulary but also help them increase their creativity and avoid SLL.

6. Focus on A Specific Skill

Find out which subjects your child struggles with during the school year to help them improve during the summer. Parents can spend 15-30 minutes a day to help their children overcome their weaknesses. Please note that all documents are easy to be found. Parents play a very important role in educating children. Various resources are available online or in bookstores. All kinds of exercise books, and games help children have fun and learn effectively. Children can play and learn with their friends at the same time.
